Baking Soda Did What?!

This tiny little voice inside my head has been prompting me for months that I needed
to try to find a natural deodorant.

I won't go into a lot of depth about the harmful side effects of regular deodorant
ingredients because I think deep down, we all know there are several.

Just a quick look...

(remember, I am certainly no expert on this subject)

1.  aluminum -  clogs our sweat ducts under our arms and is linked to breast cancer

2.  triclosan -  linked to thyroid issues

3.  parabens  -  linked to breast cancer & also interfere with hormonal balance in our body

4.  silica  -   linked to cancer

5.  talc  -  linked to cancer

To learn more about these ingredients, click here.  I have also read about a strong
link from these toxins to Alzheimer's. You may or not believe that info, but I do
think it would be hard to deny that Alzheimer's does seem to be prevalent in
today's society.

If you spend any time on Facebook at all, you have probably seen links like

Also, if you looked at any of the brands recommended in that article, you may have
realized that natural deodorants are not inexpensive.

So, at this point, I wanted to make the change, but was a bit skeptical of switching
to something that, may or may not work for me, AND it would be a bit costly to
switch, especially if the product was going to perform poorly and end up in the garbage.

Then randomly, I heard several people on YouTube mention that they use, and love,
Schmidt's natural deodorant and they all raved about the Bergamot + Lime scent.

I immediately did a quick google search and found that while this brand is $8.99 on
their website, Target had it for $4.99.

I was super excited and immediately plopped down my $5 to invest in bettering my health!

I used the Schmidt's deodorant after my shower on Thursday, then again on Friday.

By Saturday morning, I had flaming red armpits! I mean it was bad. My armpits were
bright red and raw.

After using nothing on them since Saturday, and after much babying them gingerly,
the redness was mostly gone by Tuesday, but now my armpits are peeling. Yes, like
I got a bad sunburn, and now they are peeling.

I was baffled that something that was supposed to help me live healthier, could do this.

I have done some research, and have since learned that many people have a reaction
due to the baking soda in natural deodorants.  Supposedly the baking soda sensitivity
will get better over time, but guess what. I am absolutely not going to test that theory!

Another recommended natural deodorant that I have learned about through some research
is this one from Zionhealth called ClayDry. With its $7.99 price point, and the fact that
baking soda is farther down on its ingredients list, I may get up my courage to give it a
try, I'm also reading about how to make my own natural deodorant without baking soda.
I know that sounds a bit extreme, but we shall see. Geez, I just want a healthier alternative
to toxic deodorants without flame red armpits. Is that too much to ask?!

I understand that this is a bit of an atypical blog post for me, but I did feel I needed
to warn you about natural deodorants with baking soda in them.

I'll keep you posted if/when I find a natural solution to my dilemma.

Have you tried a natural deodorant?

Do you have one to recommend?

If you haven't, do you feel it is something you would consider?

I'll see you Friday!

  1. OOOOHHH NOOOOO! Thanks for the heads up. This is something I have thought about, but I have been scared to dip my toe in the water. There was one on Vasseur Beauty's YouTube channel the other day. But, it is so expensive!

    1. Yes, I saw her recommendation for one, but like you said it was quite pricey in my opinion. Ugh, the struggle!
